"Modern Times" (1936), celebrating its) ninetieth year, is remarkable because it is M/S Charlie Chaplin all the way. Actually, a film is, by definition, an absolutely collaborative art.
Undoubtedly, the director is the captain of the ship. Yet different departments are most often handled by uniquely talented individuals.
Geniuses like Charlie Chaplin are exceptions to such mundane rules. He excelled in each and every department of film making. Most of his films are one-man-does-it-all products.
As for this ninety-year old film, "Modern Times", he was the producer, truly tough job! At stake is literally a lifetime. As for the creative aspects of film making, he was the script writer (actually any film shapes here! Remember what Hitchcock said?) as well as the director.
Moreover, he co-edited the film, a role extremely difficult then as it was the pre-analogue, the digital was not even conceptualised, era. In addition, he created the score of the film, yet again an achievement as music making was not so mechanised then.
Hence this grosser (it made $ 1.8 million at the box office) which premiered in February 5, 1936 is such a winner, a treasure literally and metaphorically!
