I did not see "Sairat" in the cinema hall. How could I possibly leave Aai alone at home, and go watch a film in some cinema hall? Instead, we watched it together on the t.v.
Anyway, the film was what is known in trade circles as a "sleeper hit". Sure, it got a standing ovation at the Berlin International Film festival, and later a series of Filmfare awards, not to forget Rinku Rajguru receiving Special Mention as a debutante when it came to the National Fim Awards.
What is a sleeper hit? Such a film may not make a sensational collection at the box office on the 'first day, first show', why, not even in the first week. Almost appearing a flop initially, it gets a "sairat" reception due to the word of mouth publicity.
I would not know the exact figures, but, sure, neither Essel Vision Productions nor the Associate Producer (the director, Nagnath Manjile himself) nor the distributors (Zee Studio) would have to regret the release, right?
Apparently, "sleeper hits" help cinema hall owners as well because they demand a certain cut from the distributor for each show, it seems. Good show" Sairat" was every which way, in brief.
Hence, in our "Soupçon", In Memorial series, we shall discuss in depth this decade old film from very many angles
