A Devoted Definition

What exactly is independence? How to define freedom? Sure dictionaries would give you the literal meaning. Disciplines such as Humanities would give you both the denotative and connotative associations of the concepts, the subtle difference between both, the complexities of the concepts in brief.

It is my submission, however, that the best definition of freedom would be found in literature, especially in poetry. Remember Tagore's much anthologised "Where the mind..." Equally evocative are poems by Subramanyam Bharati, for example.

In the wake of the tributes to Veer Savarkar in the context of his anniversary, here is an attempt to understand his definition of freedom in "Jayostute", rendered still more evocative by the Mangeshkar magic.

In a way, Savarkar's diction is Sanskritised. He has contributed very many new words to Marathi, and yet many would unjustly remember him for the definition of a "railway signal" as an "agnirath-gaman-agaman-nidarshak-loh-tamr-pattika"!!!

In the present poem, I would say there is a lively combination of the intensely personal space and the larger public sphere. My submission is that he uses Sanskrit vocabulary for the larger whole, while beautifully lyrical Marathi diction is used for the other strain.

In this more lyrical intimate scene, freedom is not the typical lodestar. It is a sparkling  star that from afar brightens the dark night. It may not be a bright star like the sun. Yet its simple sparkle is beyond any luminosity.

Yet another soft image for freedom is the lovely blush. A blush would always tell a tale, but very softly and subtly. That is the way freedom would emerge in the dead dark of the captivity, right?

Well, i intend writing a proper detailed analysis of these two different discourses in the poem. For the time being, this prelude as a tribute to Veer Sawarkar on the occasion of his birth anniversary!

Pratima@ Freedom, Liberty are indeed like the sparkle of the star, always alluring, tho' afar.
