Yes, engineers are excellent. Why, the AI has chosen to call orders given to bots as "prompt engineering", right? Hence let us take this opportunity to celebrate engineers.
What is the occasion? Well, it is the Engineers' Day today. Since 1968, when the Government of India so declared it, September 15 is celebrated as the Engineers' Day, though world wide, it is March 4 as per the U.N.
In India, September 15 is thus celebrated because it marks the birth anniversary of Sir Mokshagundam Vishwvairaiya, who in the late nineteenth century, when it was the high tide of colonialism, used his engineering skills to devise flood control mechanisms and build dams.
Engineers are special. They use technological skills to better irrigation, to build infrastructure, and to develop software which was India's sunshine industry till the AI took away its sheen. Yes, even in the AI era, engineering is going to matter. In fact, it would be centrally relevant, though here is hoping that such STEM subjects are tempered with Humanities, too.
